To Know:

We’ve shot with a lot of Variable ND filters. They were either too expensive or the quality wasn’t there. None of them hit the sweet spot on affordability, functionality, and quality… so we made our own. The filter rings are precision machined from aerospace grade metal, delivering the durability we expect when shooting. Our Variable ND Filters also feature a unique flared geometry unlike anything else on the market, allowing you to see your ND number from behind the viewfinder. This provides fast, precise control over your shots in tricky lighting, without moving from behind the camera. Made to shoot on the go, the filters also feature hard stops at both ends of the range to prevent unwanted cross polarization for the cleanest image possible.

What We Love:

Premium Glass

We chose Schott B270 Pro Cinema Glass to maintain maximum optical quality and create crisp images.

A New Level of Control

Our unique geometry and laser etched graphics allow you to see which stop you’re shooting from behind the viewfinder. This allows for faster control and easy starting points for your shots in different lighting conditions.

Zero Cross Polarization

We specifically engineered the rotation of the filter to have hard stops at both ends of the working range, preventing unwanted cross polarization.

Like sunglasses for your phone, our VND is an exceptional tool for ultimate image control.

The Moment variable ND filters were initially released in 67mm, 77mm and 82mm diameters. As of today, though, they’re available in more sizes including 58mm, 62mm and 72mm.

Our VND filter contains a ring with an extremely high quality glass element (the Schott B270 Pro Cinema Glass). Of course, on the surface for extra spice, there’s a red anodized inner-ring and magenta-red iridescent coating. And while this has to do anything with the quality of the filter’s purpose itself, we do ship it in much more minimalist packaging: an elegant black-on-black metal filter case with a threaded closure between the halves. That’s it. And while our packaging is undoubtedly more eco-friendly than competitors and contributes to keeping the filter’s cost down, the case can become rather flimsy over time and isn’t particularly too helpful in the field. Getting a good grip on the halves to twist apart is especially tricky in cold, wet weather. But again, that’s to be said about the case itself — not the quality of the filter itself.

Place the filter on the camera is, again, pretty straightforward. The outer ring is angled back towards the camera, making the indicator markings printed on it visible from behind the camera.

Testing the filter in the field produces high quality results, at a fraction of the cost compared to other VND’s on the market. The filter has a decently strong color cast, as it leans significantly to the warm side. Although color casts are seen as less than ideal, they’re also very minor problems in most cases. However, we celebrate the fact that it does NOT produce the dreaded X-pattern interference that can occur with some VND filters, nor does it produce any traditional vignetting. Cross-polarization is extraordinarily sharp and doesn’t interfere with the camera’s already amazing resolution patterns.

It allows you to achieve that natural motion blur, you can get this by keeping your shutter speed double your frame rate. Let's say you're shooting in 30fps, it's going to be hard to keep your shutter speed at roughly 1/60th in particularly bright situations. Simply put the VND on & rotate it to help control the amount of light you block out. Most of the time our 2-5 stop VND will be enough for video.
