Neutral Density filters are like sunglasses for your camera lens. They block light from coming in, allowing you to adjust shutter speed and better control your shots. A variable ND allows you to adjust the strength of the filter by rotating the filter ring.

Using two layers of glass and a mechanical rotating mechanism, it can block more or less light from coming into the camera depending how far you rotate it. This way, instead of carrying around multiple filters for different lighting conditions, you can carry just one and adjust for your specific shot.
