New Fujifilm Camera: X-H2S | First Impressions & Sample Footage
Updated on Jun 6, 2022
Another camera on the docket, and wow did Fuji deliver. Here's my first impressions on the highly anticipated hybrid camera for photographers and filmmakers.
Up to 6.2K/30P in Open Gate 3:2, 4K/120P, and Full HD/240P. This delivers unparalleled flexibility within the X Series lineup. Additionally, the ability to record 10-bit 4:2:2 Apple ProRes footage internally to CFexpress Type B memory cards offers incredible post-production flexibility, while the X-Trans 5 sensor’s 14-stop dynamic range optimizes the level of image detail across a uniquely wide exposure range.
The camera features a new heat-dissipating structure, increasing the video recording time up to 240 minutes of 4K/60P video.
X-H2S supports 4K/120P high-speed video. Now, fast-moving subjects can be recorded in incredible detail for high-quality, slow-motion footage.
In addition to a wide range of internal video recording features, X-H2S provides significant flexibility for external recording. F-Log or F-Log2, Apple ProRes RAW and Blackmagic RAW footage can all be recorded to an external device through the camera’s standard, Type A HDMI port. Unlock the full capability of X-H2S’s unmatched image quality by recording F-Log or F-Log2 in resolutions of up to 6.2K in Apple ProRes RAW and Blackmagic RAW.
An all-new 5-axis in-body image stabilization system, made possible by X-Processor 5 and a sensing control function, provides up to seven stops of compensation. This powerful feature gives users the freedom to handhold in conditions that previously would have required support, such as sports or low light.
The autofocusing system in X-H2S is not only quick, but also highly advanced. Capable of working in light levels down to -7EV and keeping up with both fast and erratically moving subjects, it now features Subject Detection autofocus, utilizing AI to deliver an unmatched autofocus performance. Whereas previous X Series models offer Face and Eye Detection AF, X-H2S’s Subject Detection AF broadens the range of identifiable subjects to further enhance focusing accuracy. The new system has the ability to identify and track cars, planes, trains, motorcyclists, birds, horses, dogs, cats and more. Furthermore, face and eye detection capabilities have been expanded to pick up hairlines, glasses, and face coverings.
X-H2S delivers powerful performance, suitable for any professional photographer or filmmaker. Continuous shooting is possible at 15 frames-per-second with the mechanical shutter, and up to 40 frames-per-second when the electronic shutter is deployed. These impressive speeds are backed up by the camera’s high-capacity buffer, which allows unlimited continuous recording and writing of JPEG and RAW files to a high-speed memory card when using the mechanical shutter. Creative possibilities abound with by the camera’s in-body image stabilization system, offering up to seven stops of shake reduction to give the handheld user true versatility.
X-H2S is the first X Series camera to feature the 26.1-megapixel, X-Trans 5 stacked back-illuminated sensor. Building on the unique X-Trans color filter array that minimizes moiré and false colors, placing the sensor’s circuitry on a separate layer from the pixels delivers outstanding image quality thanks to expanded low light capabilities and up to 14-stops of dynamic range. Allied to the sensor is the new X-Processor 5, offering lightning-fast performance for the most demanding situations. Capable of handling vast amounts of data, X-Processor 5 delivers next-level performance enhancements in video and stills processing capabilities and a 5.76 million dot resolution EVF, alongside advanced, intelligent autofocus functionality that’s 3x faster than Fujifilm’s preceding X-T4 model.
We have curated a list of other amazing options from Fujifilm. This is what our pros recommend as your best camera depending on your use case.
X-T30 II Mirrorless Camera Starting at $899 USD
This camera is recommended for beginners, amateurs, and professional photographers or filmmakers who want to upgrade from a smartphone or point-and-shoot camera to a more advanced camera. It's also a great choice for photographers who need a secondary camera.
X-S10 APS-C Mirrorless Camera Starting at $999 USD
This is our second favorite recommendation. It also has the same sensor as the X-T30. Perfect as a first-time camera for photographers and filmmakers. Compact and lightweight, with high-performance features, make it an excellent choice for those who want a portable camera that can handle various shooting situations.
X-T5 Mirrorless Camera Starting at $1,699.95 USD
For professional photographers and filmmakers, this camera is an excellent choice for those specializing in wedding and product photography. It offers high-performance features in a compact, lightweight design that is also great for on-the-go shooting.
X-H2 Mirrorless Camera Starting at $1,995 USD
This high-end mirrorless camera is recommended for professional photographers, videographers, and enthusiasts who require advanced features and performance. It is the best APS-C camera for videography in the Fujifilm line-up.
Essentially, the X-H2 excels at high-resolution stills and video, and the X-H2s is great at delivering high-speed stills and video. The X-H2 and X-H2S may look very similar, but they are targeted at two different types of users due to their sensor technologies. If you're a videographer looking to have the most detailed footage, we recommend you go for the X-H2. If you're a sports fan or a nature photographer, we highly recommend the X-H2s. At the end of the day, both cameras are great and will not let you down; just go out there and put some mileage on either of these two.
