Moment Fujifilm x Peak Design Grant Recipient

Ujin Kim

My name is Ujin — I’m a Moment creator based out of Los Angeles and my project is called "Yong Love" or "Yong Jeong" in Korean. It’s essentially a memoir of garden-to-table recipes that I learned from my mother’s side of the family - The Yongs who immigrated to the USA in the early 80s when my mom was actually my age.

At the heart of this project is a concept in Korea called jeong and it was my grandfather taught me what it means. It’s love, but not just the butterflies /// definition of jeong.
I’ve experienced and been immersed in jeong in so many ways. One of the most special is how my grandfather grows everything from seed for my grandma and our family.

There’s so much love and care that goes into the process.

In a way, both the archiving of these recipes and photos are me creating new sense-memories.

"'Young Love'

This project is a memoir of garden to table recipes that I learned from my grandmother and grandfather. It stems from a concept in korean called Jeong. Jeong is the type of love that you see in the everyday, the quiet moments. You don’t need to see to feel it. I have been immersed in their love — their jeong — ever since I was a small child. I remember always coming home with jars of kimchi and armfuls of flowers, with roots and all, so we could replant them at home.

This project is an expression of jeong, and my way of expressing it is through food."
