Basecage - Fast and Light Mobile Cage

how it works: the cage

Fast and Light

Open Rail System

Flexible Phone Mounting

Built Tough

We took the DNA of our bestselling Filmmaker Cage and made it lower profile, stronger, and more agile. The cage profile is mirrored in both directions so you can shoot vertical mode for social, or landscape for everything else. It’s great handheld for run-and-gun filmmaking, in an Arca tripod for fixed shots, or a gimbal to capture silky live-action shots.

Boasting one continuous open rail profile with NATO compatibility on the sides, top with Arca on the base. Including dozens of additional mounting points: (4) x 3/8”-16 thread, (4) x cold-shoe mounts, and (39) x 1/4”-20 threads.

BaseCage let’s you mount your phone using either our super secure industrial phone clamp or lightning fast magnetic MagSafe mount. Each mount is user replaceable and slides into position to accommodate any phone size, button layout, or lens angle.

Ready for any shoot—social, commercial, or indie film—this rugged, portable rig is cast from a single piece of lightweight metal alloy. It’s designed to protect your phone while staying compact. With a minimal profile that fits most devices, it’s built to take hits, not your phone.

Perfect on every level.

Absolutely love this one. It’s robust, feels like something made with clear consideration. Gonna use it for yeaaaaars I can just tell already.

Weak MagSafe Connection and Limited Handle Placement

The MagSafe connection is disappointingly weak—my pop socket provides double the strength. Additionally, the handles can only be attached in a single fixed position, limiting versatility.

Hey Ilka! The MagSafe connection should actually be super strong, so this definitely doesn’t sound right. Could you please send us a short clip via email showing the issue? We’d love to take a closer look and help figure out what’s going on. Szabi - Gear Guide

Good design and quality of the product

Good design and quality of the product. I noticed a few downsides - the magnet is not strong enough. If you accidentally hook the phone on the side, it falls. Also, one cutout for the wires is not enough. But I saw that in the new model of the cage these issues have already been corrected. I bought this product before Black Friday for $ 100. Then I saw the price of $ 60. And this price seems fair to me for such a product.

Cage Match

The design is simple and functional. The cage is sturdy without being too heavy. Easy to hold and film with. It also stands on it own even with a lens attached. Super quick and easy to mount your phone. The phone has not came loose running with the cage. No more getting your finger in the shot with this thing. Have not used this with a mic or light attached. There is a couple different things that make filming on your phone easier. This is one of them

Good but way too expensive

Great product but way too expensive for this quality. The frame is not assembled straight and is crooked. For this price I find it very disappointing but ok that's how it is.

Missed Opportunities & Sub-Standard Execution

I was initially hesitant to purchase the Moment Filmmaker Cage as most of the promotional photos depict the camera not square within the cage itself. This is explicitly referenced in the promotional video for ‘initial set-up’. However, I was VERY pleased to see a different version of the MAGSAFE mount which includes a secondary arm to prevent rotation (this is especially important when adding weight in the form of a Moment lens). Strangely, this feature is not featured or described anywhere on the product page but is integral to its function and performance. Unfortunately this ‘arm’ uses a square-taper interface with the primary MAGSAFE mount which is prone to significant movement unless tightened excessively. Furthermore, there seems to be an issue with the internal magnets orientations as my iPhone 15 Pro will not align correctly on it. As a benefit of the poor square-taper interface, the solution is to askew the arm for the phone to sit level. Overall, it’s just not the same attention to detail I have come to expect from Moment products.

The second consideration (read ‘problem’) is the mounting interface. Yes — Moment markets this as a cage for handheld filmmaking, but the plethora of 1/4-20 mounts enable a tripod mount to be affixed to the bottom. The first issue is where you would attach a tripod mount (in the centre of the cage) is unnecessarily milled-out, so you need to mount it to one side or the other. Secondly, this ‘base’ is ALMOST the same dimensions as the Peak Design tripod plate — a product which Moment sells and has helped contribute to its popularity. …almost. Even if the dimensions were patented, that would mean Moment just couldn’t market its compatibility, but there’s still no reason Moment couldn’t have matched the dimensions to eliminate the need for the tripod plate. So a missed opportunity for sure.

Hello Greywol! We really appreciate the time you took to share your thoughts about the Moment Filmmaker Cage. I’ve forwarded your comments to our gear team for their review. We always strive for the highest level of attention to detail, and your feedback helps us improve. Szabi - Gear Guide

Want to love it but phone falls off way too easily

My film-maker cage magnet is very pinpointed where it works. Any sudden movements too quick just releases my phone which has the moment lenses on and it just gets scratched on this metal.

Hi Tommy, I'm really sorry to hear about your experience with the magnetic force of the Filmmaker cage. I understand how frustrating it can be when it doesn't hold up well. Would you mind sending a short video to hello@shopmoment, demonstrating the weak magnetic force? Szabi - Gear Guide
