Learn more about Phone Tripods
In the past few years, smartphone photography has evolved quite a bit. Right from beginners to professionals, everyone is using their smartphone to capture some quick moments. These quick moments can be either images or videos. But sometimes, the smartphone can struggle to capture good quality shots in low light or can output unstable videos because of shaky hands.
Having a phone tripod is the solution to those problems. Carrying a phone tripod while going out on a short trip or even a run doesn’t require much. But having them by our side would mean that we won’t miss capturing any videos, time-lapses, or some long exposure photos.
What is a smartphone tripod?
A smartphone tripod is basically the camera tripod – in a smaller form factor – and with lesser capabilities. As the name suggests, the smartphone tripods are mainly built to equip a smartphone – and not a bigger camera like a DSLR or a Mirrorless.
Just like camera tripods, they have 3 legs which help in providing stability to the attached device. However, most smartphone tripods don’t have a center column. Most of them do however come with a ball head so that you can move around and point the smartphone camera in the angles you want to. Also, they have a base thread of 1/4-inch where you will need to attach a smartphone mount – which will then allow you to get your smartphone on the tripod.
Why should you get a phone tripod?
Smartphone cameras have been pretty capable of capturing quick moments of our life. However, if you want to capture better images in low-light environments and have stable videos, having a smartphone tripod can really be handy. Let’s quickly go through all the reasons why one must own a phone tripod.
One of the most important reasons to get a phone tripod is for getting stability. Also, this is the main purpose of any tripod – and not only the smartphone tripod. You can attach your smartphone to the tripod by using a smartphone mount and shoot stable video clips or time-lapses.
Also, if you are shooting in low-light environments and don’t have any access to studio lights, having a stable smartphone tripod can help you out to get well-lit photos – by having a longer shutter speed.
If you are someone who loves to travel quite a bit while also creating content on your phone, portability will be an important factor to get a phone tripod. When we are on the move and we still want to create great pieces of content, then a phone tripod can come in clutch. Such portability isn’t offered by carrying a DSLR with a camera tripod.
The portability of the smartphone tripods is not only because of the size but also because of their weight. Most of these cell phone tripods are made of plastic – with a few exceptions where we might find aluminum alloy. But having a plastic body does help here to reduce the weight – which increases portability.
Carrying a phone tripod is way easier and much more convenient than carrying a camera tripod. There are smartphone tripods available in the market that might just fit in your pockets or even get into the water bottle pockets of your backpack.
Not only that but having the convenience to pull it out anywhere and set it up within seconds is another bonus point. Also, with the Joby Gorillapod, you can even place it or even attach it to any weird spot and get the shot you need.
Sometimes, when we shoot handheld, the final shots might end up being shaky or even blurry. That usually happens when the shutter is open for a longer period of time and our hands are shaking a bit. Such shaky shots can also be the result of using more zoom or macro on the smartphone – at which point – it gets way more difficult to focus on a subject.
In all such circumstances, if we want to get sharper images, a cell phone tripod can come in clutch. It will stabilize the shots – which will indeed help us get sharper and non-blurry images.
Long Exposure Shots
Most of the smartphones that were launched in the past couple of years come with the ability to shoot long exposure shots. Some of them can allow users to select the shutter speed while others would decide based on the stability of the device.
Irrespective of how they select the shutter speed, if you want to shoot long exposure shots i.e., having the shutter open for a longer period, you will need to get a tripod. Whether you are aiming to shoot some dreamy landscape shots, or you just want to shoot low-light images on your phone, a phone tripod will always help you out.
Easy to Use
The smartphone tripods are easy to use – and one can learn almost everything about it on the first day itself. Right from opening its legs to attaching the smartphone with the smartphone mount is easy – and no instructions would be needed for that.
Also, the ease of use here isn’t limited to just smartphones as you might also be able to mount items like your action cameras on these tripods – with specific mounts that come with a quarter-inch thread.
One doesn’t need to carry a heavy and bulky DSLR or a mirrorless camera – along with their lenses – on all trips. Sometimes, with this additional gear, one might forget to experience the natural beauty themselves. As smartphones are pretty capable these days of capturing great shots by themselves, that’s all one should carry while going on a short relaxation trip.
Also, computational photography on smartphones is pretty amazing these days. And for that to work in its full capacity, a smartphone tripod will always come in handy.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
If you are looking for cell phone tripods for the first time, it’s completely normal to have several questions about them. But don’t worry as we will be covering some of the frequently asked questions about cell phone tripods right here.
How much does a phone tripod cost?
There’s no exact price for a phone tripod. However, you can find a decent smartphone tripod around USD 30 to USD 50. But if you are willing to get one of the best in this category – along with the phone holder for the tripod, you should be looking to spend at least around USD 80.
Also, there are some items like selfie stick which will do its own job while also working as a tripod. And hey, these don’t cost a lot either.
What tripod do YouTubers use?
Not every YouTuber is the same. Also, not every YouTuber uses the same gear. So, the tripod that is used by a YouTuber will vary from person to person. However, one of the most commonly used tripods for vlogging on YouTube was the Joby Gorillapod. It’s a great tripod and with a smartphone mount, you can easily attach your device to it.
Should I get the Joby Gorillapod instead of a regular phone tripod?
This would totally depend on how you want to use the phone tripod. If you know that you are going to use it at home or in a studio, then you should be good to go with either of them. However, if want to attach your phone tripod to weird locations – like on a fence or around a chair – then the Joby Gorillapod would be a better option.
I have a camera tripod. Should I still invest in a smartphone tripod?
If you are fine carrying around the bigger and heavier camera tripod everywhere, then you should not get a smartphone tripod. Just get a good tripod mount – and you should be good to go. However, if you don’t want to carry the camera tripod everywhere – just for mounting the smartphone, then you should definitely invest in a good smartphone tripod and mount.
I want to use one tripod for DSLR as well as my phone. Can I do that?
You can absolutely do that.
However, to make this work, you will need a camera tripod as a regular phone tripod isn’t rated to carry a higher payload. With the camera tripod - like the Travel Tripod by Peak Design, you can get one or more smartphone mounts to attach your device to the tripod. There’s also one advantage of doing this – and that advantage is you will be able to change the tripod heads and use the capability of those different heads as well.
Do you have a phone tripod mount that can directly work with MagSafe?
Yes. That’s something we make and carry on our store.
We offer our Pro Tripod Mount with MagSafe in two different options – Landscape only and Landscape and Portrait. As their name suggests, the former can only be used in landscape orientation while the latter will allow you to place your device in the landscape as well as portrait mode.
