Our Ultimate Guide To Filters

The How, The Why, The When

Many must-have photography filters, such as polarizers and strong neutral density (ND) filters, can produce effects that are time-consuming or even impossible to replicate digitally. Not only can they protect your lens and enhance a wide range of colors, but they’re known for helping ensure accurate exposures to your images and add overall impact to your photos and videos.

Check out below our 4 favorite filters to use; how to use them, why to use them, and when to use them. If you’re a visual learner, be sure to watch the video linked above.

CineBloom Diffusion Filter

$49.99 - $79.99

Take off that digital edge.

Available in densities of 10% and 20%, Moment CineBloom Diffusion Filters are the secret sauce to capturing dreamy, film-like footage. Escape the clinical, ultrasharp look of digital with this specialty glass. It not only catches and blooms light, but has a smoothing effect on skin tones, making wrinkles less noticeable. The ring of the filter is precision machined from aerospace grade metal, delivering the durability we expect for all of our shoots. It’s also specially designed to be thin enough to stack underneath another filter without compromising field of view. This means you can use an ND or VND on top of it for shooting cinematic frame rates and capturing motion blur. The glass itself is made by fusing a micro layer of black particulates between two layers of top grade Japanese filter glass, allowing us to maintain full image quality. We are able to precisely control the density of these particulates to offer 2 different strengths of diffusion filters. Take your footage to timeless, cinematic heights with CineBloom from Moment.

62MM UV Filter

The perfect aide against harsh sunlight

UV filters are most commonly used to protect the front of your lens. A first line of defense against scratches, rain, dirt and dust. For this reason, most photographers leave it attached to the lens all the time. But the filter also plays an important role in filtering through UV Haze. Not a huge problem when you are taking pictures at sea-level, but as you hike into higher altitudes the filter definitely helps cut through the haze to increase contrast and improve color.

The NXT UV filters have a precision milled lightweight aluminum slim profile frame that makes it perfect for all lenses including super wide-angles. The frame sports full front filter threads that can accept a normal lens cap or allows you to stack additional filters like a circular polarizer or neutral density (ND).

  • Filters out UV Haze at higher elevations helping to increase contrast and saturation.
  • Works great with Moment Lenses. To use with Moment Lenses, you will need a Filter Mount.
  • Manufactured using high quality optical glass with 6-layers of multi-coatings which allows light to travel through the glass for improved

67mm Variable ND Filters

$179.99 USD

Your Go-To ND filter

We’ve shot with a lot of Variable ND filters. They were either too expensive or the quality wasn’t there. None of them hit the sweet spot on affordability, functionality, and quality… so we made our own.

Available as a 2-5 stop or 6-9 stop, Moment Variable ND filters are the secret sauce to controlling your exposure. Made with premium Schott B270 Pro Cinema Glass, these filters are crisp edge to edge without color fringing or cross polarization. The filter rings are precision machined from aerospace grade metal, delivering the durability we expect when shooting. Our Variable ND Filters also feature a unique flared geometry unlike anything else on the market, allowing you to see your ND number from behind the viewfinder. This provides fast, precise control over your shots in tricky lighting, without moving from behind the camera. Made to shoot on the go, the filters also feature hard stops at both ends of the range to prevent unwanted cross polarization for the cleanest image possible.

  • You can stack ND filters to get different stops. (ie. a 3-stop on top of a 6-stop is equivalent to a 9-stop filter)
  • It's lightweight and made of top of the line materials.
  • Allows you to control light for better photos and videos.
