The Insta360 One R Hands-On Review

What 360-degree video should have been all along.

With impeccable stabilization, optional 360 degree video, and a long list of incredibly useful features — this is exactly what a sports camera should be about. I took this camera to the coast of Maine as a treat to my creative self and had boot loads of fun. Let’s deep dive into the specs and what I loved most.

To Know:

Insta360 is no stranger to super fun cameras made for action-packed enthusiasts like myself. Having been able to try this camera for both 360 video AND a wide range of other uses it tells the tale of living, I was able to truly get the most out of this legendary piece of tech. What I love most about this camera at a high level is that it allows you to capture any experience from a unique perspective to help better share your story telling. One thing to possibly note is the iOS USB support is missing from the Insta360 One R, unless you specifically bought from the Apple Store. A few customers on Reddit found this out a bit ago.

ONE R Twin Edition transforms on the fly from a 360 cam to a 4K 60fps wide-angle shooter. You'll always have the right tool to capture the action. All pixels are not created equal. The Dual-Lens 360 Mod raises the bar with Super 5.7K resolution, leveraging H.265 encoding, advanced image processing and an AI-powered finishing algorithm to preserve detail and make your footage pop. FlowState achieves gimbal-like stabilization without the gimbal. Thanks to a new scene-detection algorithm, your footage stays clear and steady even in low light. It also includes an invisible selfie stick, which lets you capture easy aerial angles and unique third-person perspectives with a flick of the wrist while using the Dual-Lens 360 Mod. A unique feature is the Bullet Time 2.0, which shots put you at the heart of the action. Automatic horizon leveling and smart speed-ramping make them easier than ever. Select your subject with a tap or a voice command when shooting in 360. ONE R's AI-powered tracking algorithm keeps it locked in center-frame. Even when obstacles break your line of sight, Deep Track picks up the shot as soon as your subject reappears.

One of the coolest features that comes with this camera are, of course and obviously, the 360 degree mini masterpiece. Shot Lab makes creative edits easy, it’s a continuously updated range of smart templates that walk you through the latest 360-degree camera techniques and automatically master your edit. With timeshift, you can highlight key moments with cinematic slow-mo, or speed things up with a stabilized hyperlapse. Another impressive feature is the fact that you can give the camera infinite possibilities and perspectives. Auto Frame uses a powerful computer-vision algorithm to sift through them and recommend the ones that are worth adding to your edit. Of course, it wouldn’t be a camera from Insta360 without the useful editing app that finalizes your shots in a quick few clicks of a button. Get hands-on with the ONE R app's full-featured editor or let FlashCut handle it for you, it uses AI to find your best shots and create cinematic clips that are ready to share. If you wish, you’re able to quickly edit the HDR capture for photo and video by manually adjusting highlights, shadows and everything in between just as you see them. The low-light on the One R is pretty amazing, turn on the Night Shot mode after dark to capture photos that stay natural, clear and vibrant. And hey, if you’re interested in capturing unique starlight images — Starlapse mode automatically adjusts exposure settings to capture brilliant, sweeping timelapses of the night sky.

The camera feels durable and strong in the hands. Its modular design isn’t much larger than your typical sports camera, so it’s exactly what you’d expect. The controls are super straightforward, which include a power button at the top right with the record button directly next to it. A small door is on the side for a microSD slot to protect your storage.

One downside that I’ll be transparent about, but isn’t a big deal breaker, is its small screen. Having the chance to swap lenses on an action camera is fun and isn’t like a clunky DSLR to get the job done right. The One R allows users to swap between a wide-angle camera, a rear-facing wide-angle camera, or a higher resolution 1-inch sensor.

In Detail:

There are twin lenses available for the wide-angle shots. The 4K wide-angle mod will capture images from a f/2.8 lens on a 12MP sensor. Videos are able to be on a full-sensored 4x3 at 30FPS, or Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) at 60FPS. Their HD videos are available at up to 200FPS for slow motion, which is a tremendous amount. The One R’s 360 mod uses a slightly brighter lens at f/2.0. Stills can be captured at 18.4 megapixels while videos are shot at 5,760 pixels wide. But it’s important to note that the pixels are fully spread across the 360 degree field of video instead of being on the screen all at once, so the true resolution you’ll notice will be much less. Photos and videos from both mods met my expectations with grand detail and color. When left in auto mode, the exposure was generally pretty great and only needed slight adjustments with light on certain occasions in post.
