Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10 Plus Launch

First look at the new devices live from Samsung Unpacked 2019

We’ve reached the age when “plus” sized smartphones are bigger than the early tablet-phones and tablet-phones come in two sizes. Ready for this? The Note 10 (non-plus) is just about the same size as the Galaxy S10+(which means it’s actually smaller than the OnePlus 7 Pro), while the Note 10 Plus is a 6.8-inch flagship in every sense of the word. With more space inside for battery and processors, the Note 10 Plus comes with 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage.

The Note has always occupied an interesting spot in Samsung’s range--it’s about half a generation ahead of the same-number Galaxy phones. The gap is narrowing as smartphones get bigger and more feature-packed and tablets change and replace laptops. Still, there are plenty of use cases for a slightly-wider phone with a bigger battery, a better screen, and even a stylus.

What’s New

The crowd-favorite iridescent rainbow finish is new and seriously cool. The headphone jack is gone, replaced by a USB-C port as seems to be the way of the future. HDR10+ Certified OLED screens are standard on both versions. The stylus is now a much sturdier unibody device and can control the phone with gestures. And there are some tantalizing hardware and software updates that will affect photo and video output.

Camera Tech

We’re most stoked about the developments to the already-impressive Samsung 10 generation cameras. The hardware specs for the Note and Note Plus are:

  • 12-megapixel dual-aperture lens
  • 16-megapixel wide-angle lens
  • 12-megapixel telephoto lens
  • 10-megapixel front-facing camera

There is built-in lens switching just like on the Galaxy S10 series, though the Note 10 family makes do with one selfie cam; Samsung cited improvements in the camera itself and processing software and we like the return to the centered single-lens.

New Video Features

Unique to the Galaxy Note 10 Plus is a fourth 3D depth-sensing camera on the back, which brings a more sophisticated portrait video mode that promises to offer convincing bokeh in video format, along with an augmented reality feature called AR Doodle. Samsung also says it's improving the smoothness of its super steady video mode that we saw on the Galaxy S10 phones. The mode also now applies to hyperlapse mode.

Samsung also unveiled a new video feature called ‘zoom-in mic,’ which uses multiple microphones and A.I. to target the sound source you’re focusing on. Samsung claims its new front-facing mics will record directional audio and “focus” on a video subject as you zoom in.

Compatible with Moment Lenses

The best news of all? We already made a new case and fit lenses on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10 Plus. We’ve long been fans of the color grading on Samsung device cameras, and the Note 10 brings some intriguing changes that may take the mobile filmmaking process. We’re heading back to Seattle for some hands-on testing of the Note 10 Plus(full review coming soon!), but you can pre-order your case (and save 20%) right now.

Gear up for the Note 10.
