Not Your Average Company Meeting

Many times, us humans want our tender moments to be temporarily unbothered. We wish to escape the violent snarl of a 9-5, the dreariness of routine, and the fidgety nature of everyday life. Much like the moon, we want to rip through ever-changing tides to feel full again. With Moment, we want to feel that rippling connection between all of the workers that reside in each corner of the U.S; to bond with our people. We do so with company offsites — a week of fun, play, and planning.

Our CEO and co-founder, Marc Barros, is truly a human of unique valor and over-hyphenated intrigue. We love his chaotic never-stop-on-the-go vibrant language used throughout his career and we certainly love the way we makes us push a little harder each day than the next. He wrote an elongated tweet that hits ya’ right in the gut that I just had to share...

“Each offsite is more important than the last. Scale brings new opportunities. And yet it also brings new complexities. What started as a 3 day hike with 4 people and no agenda has become 6 days, 47 people, and three weeks of work just to be prepared. But these weeks have shaped us. They have removed our collective insecurities. They have connected us past the work. And they have challenged us to learn faster. We’ve shared meals and washed each other’s dishes. We’ve hiked trails and watched sunsets. We’ve stayed up late to finish projects together only to get up early to answer customer emails. We’ve laughed. We’ve danced. We’ve cried.I don’t know where this journey takes us. Or even where we’ll end up. I don't even know if you could recreate what we have. But what I do know, is that these weeks are something I’ll never forget.”

Cool, I’m crying now.

Legacy

This offsite was particularly memorable in the sense of size: we have grown to just under 50 people over the course of 4 and a half years. That’s quite an accomplishment, and it’s only getting bigger. Each individual brings a fresh sense of self and talent, something a team wouldn’t be able to thrive without. But getting here will be hard. It’s hard to keep 50-100 people heading the same direction. It’s hard for individuals to shift from loving the breadth of their work to loving the depth. It’s hard for team leads to scale fast enough. It’s hard to stay aggressive when startup death doesn’t feel as imminent. It’s hard to shift from executing daily work to thinking about how we win markets. It’s hard to grow and not destroy the very essence of what makes Moment unique.

All of it is hard. So why do it? Legacy.

The larger we become, the more customers we reach, the more creatives we can impact, the more people we can employ, the more partners we can hire and ultimately the more our work will be remembered. Growth gives you a chance at legacy.

Let's make history together.

The Way We Move

Hikes are a natural component to Moment’s offsite culture; it bonds us in more ways than one. More than the sore legs, more than the crazy uphills and beer breaks — it forces us to see what lies beyond environmental differences. We’d come together as a team to enjoy the sunset blanket across the beautiful horizon of Utah, we’d take leaps of faith over the bed of rocks to swing rope across the gorge, and sing happy birthday’s to Mike and Randall on the eve of Monday and Thursday. We’d drink, laugh, play codenames, and dance all night ‘till the break of dawn. Well, kind of. Maybe not that late.

I noticed something while I took a plunge into the freezing cold water of Bear Lake; there is a breif moment when you dive underwater when the entire world goes silent. That instant reset, a purification, a restful peace. I want to fully live in that space time and time again with those that want to, too. It’s a special feeling.

Let's Make History

It’s a privilege to create, work, and bond with these people. It’s ever changing nature and growth is something I value in the workplace more than anything else.

Here’s to the trimester, here’s to forever.

Roll tide.
