Welcome To Naples: City of a Thousand Colors

Words + Photos : Giovanni Pone

Welcome to Naples, “La Città dei Mille Colori," or "The City of a Thousand Colors," as it was named by the great Neapolitan artist Pino Daniele. Naples is known for its unique Italian charm and incredible weather and sunlight most of the year. With so many exciting things to capture, here are my top five places to check out in Naples:

1. Borgo Marinari

Passing through Santa Lucia, you will reach the seafront and can admire the the “Borgo Marinari” located on the tiny island of Megaride. Borgo Marinari is a former fishing harbor that has become a picturesque place, full of sailboats, restaurants, and lounge bars. On the main path to the castle, you’ll find a Pulcinella, playing and singing the melodies that have made the Neapolitan song famous all over the world.

2. Basilica di San Francesco di Paola & Palazzo Reale

The Basilica di San Francesco and the Royal Palace face one another from across the Piazza del Plebiscito, one of the most famous squares in the city. Walking among the impressive architecture is the best way to experience the beauty of these two monuments that leave breathless both Neapolitans and tourists.

3. Castel Dell’ovo

Castel Dell'Ovo, literally Castel of the Egg, overlooks the Borgo Marinari. As Naples is a city full of history, you can find monuments at every corner of the street, ready to be photographed. It is said that the poet Virgil, also known as a magician, hid an egg in the castle dungeon that maintained the fortress. I suggest photographing here around dusk. As the light fades, you'll begin to catch cool shadows and silhouettes from various openings in the castle.

4. Posillipo

Posillipo is a must-see to admire the gulf and its crystal water from another point of view. It’s the perfect place for those who love photographing and exploring unusual places!

5. Marechiaro

Marechiaro, named for the calmness of the waters, is the best spot in all of Naples for tranquil views. It has long-been a source of inspiration for artists, and it remains an ideal place to relax and take in the amazing landscape. In the warmer months, fishermen, with their small boats, are happy to give a lift to visitors to reach the otherwise inaccessible coves.
