Q & A With De Anastacia

Where are you from?

Desert born and raised, fashion photographer Natasha Wilson has had a mutual passion for art & travel her entire life. Inspired by culture and each location’s color palette, she hopes her unique perspective flows vicariously through her photographs, and transports the viewer into a dream-like world. Her process usually includes painting her own hues over her images, reducing the color palette to a cohesive blend of hues.

A few sentences talking about the film:

This is a story about a fallen Martian that lands in downtown Los Angeles. Intrigued by the atmosphere, loud music, and electric energy, she roams aimlessly around the city, spurred forward by her curiosity. Along her route, she crosses paths with a girl that quickly becomes her shadow. The Martian notices but doesn't seem to mind, and the two become friends without even talking.

What made decide to shoot this particular piece? What inspired you to make this film?

I found the Martian costume at a dance discount store for $10. I didn’t know what I was going to use it for at the time, but I knew I had to buy it. An idea formed when I was randomly listening to the song, “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream" by My Morning Jacket, in my car. When I started to envision the story to the music, a message formed in my head that I wanted to get across. You can befriend someone, even if they don’t speak the same language as you.

Tell us a little bit about how you set your iPhone up to shoot. What was your iPhone rig like?

I had the wide lens, the macro lens, and the Tele lens on set with me, but my go to favorite lens was the Wide. It gave just the right amount of “sci fi” vibe, as well as showcasing the locations, which was most important.

What was your biggest challenge(s) of shooting this film all on a phone?

The biggest challenge for me was dealing with lighting and how the iPhone perceives it. The best light was during high noon. The harsh, bright light actually showcased the best contrast and clarity in colors for me.
