Day Trip: Los Angelos Architecture Highlights

Words : Dani Chase

Okay, so you have 24 hrs in Los Angeles (a city the size of a small country). Worry not — here’s how to see the important architectural attractions and get a ton of great photos without spending 4 hours on Yelp and Timeout.

Have more than a day? Terrific. You can easily devote half a day to exploring each of these locations.

#1 – Start Downtown, or DTLA.

Probably you’re hungry; probably you’re energized and ready to take on the world. Downtown means delicious grub at Grand Central Market, and it means more walking than any other part of the city. There are endless photo highlights here, including The Broad, Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Last Bookstore, and Chinatown.

#2 – Go West to LACMA

While the Broad is some of the most memorable architecture in LA, perhaps the most interactive campus belongs to LACMA. This is where you’ll find Chris Burden’s heavily Instagrammed light pole installation, Jesús Rafael Soto’s “Penetrable” installation (aka “Is that spaghetti?”), the saddest Wooly Mammoths you’ve ever seen, and more.

#3 – Head to the Hills

Okay, sure. You can’t come to LA without seeing the Hollywood Sign, but don’t waste your money on a goofy red bus tour. The place you’re looking for is Griffith Observatory. Buried in the Hollywood Hills, the gorgeous Observatory is inside Griffith Park, LA’s largest green space. This is also my favorite view of the city. If you have more than a day, definitely come in time for sunset. Drive or walk all the way up and check out the free museum inside; there’s a cool display about pinhole cameras.

#4 – Unforgettable

If the name Richard Meier means anything to you, then the Getty is already on your radar. Either way, definitely go see this structural beaut. If you make some extra time, don’t forget to explore the museum too. It’s another amazingly free one!

#5 – Beach time, babe!

There are two beaches with photogenic features (both structural and landscape architecture), but you can only pick one for sunset. So the question is, what do you want in the foreground of your photos? Venice’s muscle beach and skatepark? Or Santa Monica pier’s neon-lit ferris wheel and rollercoaster? Both are chock full of palm trees and interesting people to use as photo subjects.
