Learn more about Wall Chargers

If you are on the internet, you might already know that most pieces of technology today require a wall charger to operate. Whether it is to charge the lithium-ion battery present inside the device or draw direct power, most pieces of technology would need a wall charger. This helps us understand the actual importance of such wall chargers in today's world.

Most devices are now shifting towards a universal standard for charging - with a USB-C Port on the charger and the device. This helps ensure that a device can be charged or operated from the charger that one already has - and indeed reduce the overall waste created. Also, with several laptops already adopting the USB-C cables for charging, one has the ability to charge them with powerful cell phone chargers.

What is a USB Wall Charger?

A USB Wall Charger is a small piece of technology that can plug into the power socket and charge or supply power to other electronic gadgets. These wall chargers used to come with cables permanently attached to the charger - but that has been changed today. With most wall chargers, you will have separate cables to charge your devices.

The selection of cables would also depend on the device you are willing to charge and the USB ports available on the power adapter. Also, some will have multiple output ports that would likely allow you to charge multiple devices at once - while using just one charger. Just make sure that you still have different cables for multiple devices, as it's impossible to use one cable on multiple devices.

Things to keep in mind while purchasing USB Wall Chargers

When you are going out to shop for USB wall chargers, you will find several different options in the market today. Some will be a USB-C charger with a single USB-C output port, while others might have multiple ports - as well as multiple types of ports. When we look at all these different options, selecting one of these chargers becomes quite tough.

To make the purchase decision easier for you, we provide you with the things you need to keep in mind while purchasing chargers. Let's just quickly go through all of these things!

The technology used for charging

While there are so many wall chargers available in the market, they aren't the same - and they don't even use the same technology. Some of these chargers are just basic 5W - which would charge your device extremely slowly. However, there is a pretty big market for other chargers with fast-charging technologies.

There are a few main technologies that are used by the chargers for faster charging. One of these technologies is the Qualcomm Quick Charge - which has in itself went through several iterations. While this technology was great for smartphones, other devices couldn't use its capability by much. This was when the USB-PD, also known as USB Power Delivery, came into existence.

Most USB-PD chargers today come with a USB-C port through which one can attach a USB-C to a USB-C cable to charge your device. With this technology, many laptops even started adopting it - which led to further improvements in the technology and the charging speeds.

Today, you can also find wall chargers that use Gallium Nitride, allowing the overall footprint to be smaller while producing less heat and still having the same charging speeds. We have one such GaN wall charger in our store - which is compact and powerful. If you are looking for a charger, we highly recommend you looking at the 68W Boost Charge  Dual USB-C GaN Wall Charger by Belkin.

Power Output

The charging speed is highly dependent on the power output of the said charger and the capacity of intake for the device that is being charged. With chargers that have a single USB-C port, the power output is pretty easy to find on those. You will always find them in the description of such chargers.

However, when you go for a charger that has two USB ports or more, things change. In such cases, you will usually see the combined power output of the chargers in the description. The power output on individual ports will be different - unless it is specifically specified in the description.

The 68W Belkin Charger that we have in our store has a combined output of 68W. However, one of the ports supports a power output of up to 18W, while the other port would output about 50W-60W of power - depending on whether the second port is being used or not. It is quite important to check this information when you are buying a charger with dual USB-C ports - as they are the ones supporting higher charge speeds.

Number of USB Ports

If you want to charge multiple devices simultaneously, then you will need multiple ports on the charger. Today, many chargers come with two USB-C ports or more, and they can easily help you out with this. Also, some chargers have a USB-A port in addition to the Type-C ports.

You will need to keep this in mind - depending on your needs - and select a charger with the number of ports you need, alongside other features. Also, even if you need single-port chargers, we highly recommend getting a dual-port charger instead of that. Sooner - rather than later - that additional charging port will come in handy.

Types of USB Ports

When selecting a wall charger today, you will see chargers with different types of USB Ports on them. Earlier, there used to be no USB port as the cable was attached to the charger itself. Later, we got used to seeing chargers with a USB-A port. And today, we can find chargers with both - USB-C ports and USB-A ports - and a combination of them too.

There are even chargers available with four USB ports - where you can find both these types of ports. However, we would highly recommend you to go with the charger with a USB-C port or a combination of both types of ports for better compatibility with devices - even in the future.

Form Factor and Size

While a wall charger is mainly used at the house or an office, they are also carried in the backpack while traveling. And if you are purchasing a new charger for travel, the form factor and size of the power brick becomes a crucial factor for a purchase decision.

To have the smallest - yet powerful wall charger, you will need to search for one that uses the latest technology and comes with a foldable plug. It is essential to note that while the form factor and size decreases, the features and the maximum output of these wall chargers don't have to.

If you buy the correct charger, you will still be able to supply power to two devices simultaneously - given that you bought one with multiple ports. And well, if you want to supply power to a single device and have that compact size, you can look at the Anker Powerport III Nano - as that can supply enough power to charge most smartphones quickly.

Extra Features or Accessories

Some chargers like the Anker PowerPort Atom PD 2 can intelligently decide the power output of each USB-PD port. Also, it can supply a power output of up to 60W - which is sometimes equivalent to the output provided through an AC outlet for a laptop. So, most phones would easily be able to charge through this.

It is also worth mentioning that not all chargers would come with fast-charge cables. So, if you want your new phone charger to have a cable in the package, you need to see if the description of the product you are looking to buy has mentioned that or not. And if there is a combo package available, that might just cost you the same amount or less - when you buy a cable separately.

Even with all these extra features, it can still be an affordable charger. You don't need to spend a lot to get these features - which is great.
